 FNPH Benin Research Ethics Committee Organized A-3 Day Intensive Training for Its Committee Members and Other Members of Staff

The Research Ethics Committee of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Benin City, organized a 3-day virtual and in-person training for its members, including other staff members, on 23rd-25th June, 2025.

The training which held at the Seminar Room of the New Clinical Science building at Uselu site was facilitated by experts from the National Health Research Ethics Committee of Nigeria led by Prof. Omokhoa Adeleye.

The Chief Host, Dr Imafidon O. Agbonile, Medical Director of the hospital officially declared the ethics training open and warmly welcomed the facilitators and participants. He noted that training and re-training was essential for any workforce, and expressed confidence that at the end of the training, the participants would be well-equipped with all the requirements to handle ethical issues that have to do with research.

The facilitator, Prof. Adeleye began the session by excitedly introducing the participants, and a pre-test session was conducted to assess participants’ baseline knowledge. Some of the topics covered during the training included:

  • History and Theoretical Foundations of Research Ethics
  • Introduction to the National Code of Health Research Ethics
  • Composition, Functions and Operations of Research Ethics
  • Committees in Nigeria
  • Informed Consent in Research
  • Publication Ethics
  • The Scope of Ethical Issues in Data Management
  • Conflict of Interest and How to Manage Them
  • Reproducibility and Replicability of Research
  • Collaborative and International Research Proposals. etc.

Other facilitators and speakers include Prof. Vincent Adam, Prof. Israel Aina, Dr. Yemihan Ogbetere and Mr. Ado Danladi. The training was concluded with a post-test and presentation of certificates to the participants. In his vote of thanks, the Chairman of the Ethical Research Committee of the hospital, Dr. O. Akanni (Consultant Psychiatrist) thanked the facilitators for an impactful and insightful training. He also appreciated the participants and the hospital’s management for their support in making the training a huge success.
