The Medical Director of Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, (FNPH) Benin City, Dr Imafidon Osama Agbonile, has been honoured with the prestigious Honorary Fellowship Award of the Society for Experimental Biology of Nigeria (NISEB).
The award was presented during the 25th Annual National Conference and General Meeting of NISEB, held on June 9, 2026, at the Main Auditorium of the University of Benin, Benin City. Presenting the award, the President of NISEB stated that the honour was bestowed on Dr Agbonile in recognition of his distinguished contributions to healthcare, exceptional medical leadership, and outstanding positive impact on mental health care in Nigeria. Other recipient of the same award was the distinguished Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Benin City, Professor Bright Omoregie Edoba, SAN.
Dr Agbonile visibly moved by the honour, expressed gratitude to the Society for the recognition, describing the award as a great honour and a motivation to continue contributing to the advancement for healthcare services in Nigeria. “The recognition was not just personal but symbolic of the growing importance of mental health in Nigeria’s healthcare agenda”, he said.
The event underscored the vital role of experimental biology in addressing pressing national challenges, from climate change to food security and public health. By honoring Dr Agbonile, NISEB highlighted the synergy between scientific innovation and medical leadership in building a healthier Nigeria.
