The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Benin (FNPH) held its Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference with the theme ‘Brain Drain in the Nigeria Healthcare System: A Two-Sided Coin; the Way Forward’ and sub-theme “The Impact of Burnout on the Nigerian Healthcare System; the Place of Healthcare Personnel and the Role of Government” The conference was held from Wednesday, December 20th to Saturday, December 23rd, 2023.

During his address, the Medical Director, Dr. Imafidon O. Agbonile, commended ARD Uselu for organizing the conference and their commitment to the profession; he added that being the first elected president of ARD Uselu, it is a pleasure for him to be here today.

The medical director said the choice of theme for the conference is very apt considering the movement of medical personnel from the health sector, which he called a complete epidemic movement. He added that it is also a way of reaching out to the government concerning these challenges.

The president of the ARD, Dr. Okonkwo Barthlomew C., said in his opening address that the theme of the conference is a look into the challenges facing the healthcare sector in this area, and he urged the authorities and agencies involved to do the needful and ensure such challenges are effectively handled.

Dr. Lawani Ambrose Onivefu, a Consultant Psychiatrist and the head of the Forensic Unit of FNPH Benin was one of the guest speakers. He delivered a keynote lecture on the theme, ‘Brain Drain in the Nigeria Healthcare System: A Two-Sided Coin; the Way Forward’.

Dr. Ehigiator Adayonfo, a Consultant psychiatrist in the Department of Mental Health at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, delivered a lecture on the sub-theme “The Impact of Burnout on the Nigerian Healthcare System: The Place of Healthcare Personnel and the Role of Government.”

In the closing remark the medical director appreciated both speakers for their excellent delivering on the topics. He also thanked members of staffs and participants for their presence and attention.

The president of the ARD, Dr. Okonkwo, in his vote of thanks appreciated the staff and management of the hospital for their support in making the conference a huge success.

Other activities lined up during the conference week are presentations by Biogeneric Pharmaceutical Company, business meetings, and dinner.
