FNPH Benin Organizes Capacity-Building Training on Substance-Use Assessment and Counseling

The Management of Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital (FNPH), Benin City successfully organized a three-day intensive training programme for selected clinical staff of the hospital. The training, which took place from Wednesday, 18th – Friday 20th June, 2025, was held at the Review Room of DATER Phase I, Uselu site.

The training was designed to build capacity and deepen the knowledge of clinical staff – comprising nurses, clinical psychologists, and occupational therapists – on issues surrounding substance use among patients. The sessions focused on effective counseling approaches, identification techniques, and the practical application of validated screening tools in the management of substance use disorders.

Participants were introduced to a variety of internationally recognized assessment tools, including the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST), the CAGE questionnaire, the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), and the TWEAK screening tool. These tools are essential for early detection and informed clinical decision-making in substance use interventions.

The training was facilitated by a team of seasoned professionals: Dr J.O. Ariyo (Clinical Psychologist); Miss V.E. Efiong (Clinical Psychologist) and Dr S. Ekakitie (Consultant Psychiatrist). Their presentations provided insightful, evidence-based strategies for enhancing therapeutic engagement and improving clinical outcomes for patients struggling with substance use. Participants expressed appreciation for the enriching experience and pledged to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in their respective clinical settings to better serve the hospital’s patients. The training reflects the hospital’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its services and align with best practices in the management of substance use and mental health disorders.
