Dr. Imafidon O. Agbonile Delivered Lecture on Post-Graduation Pathways at the University of Benin

On Tuesday, March 5th 2024, the Medical Director of Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Benin City, Dr Imafidon O. Agbonile, delivered a thought-provoking lecture at the prestigious University of Benin (UNIBEN). The event, which was organized by the Nigeria Association of Marketing Students (UNIBEN Chapter), centered on the theme “After School, What Next”.

Dr Agbonile who is also the current Chairman of the National Institute of Marketing, Benin chapter emphasized the significance of the theme, particularly for students on the cusp of graduation. His address shed light on the myriad opportunities available to the young minds, fuelled by the ongoing digital revolution. With the world rapidly evolving, graduates find themselves at a crossroads, and Dr Agbonile expertly dissected three distinct paths they can embark upon, viz: the employee route, entrepreneurial journey, and global horizons.

Dr Agbonile explained that graduates can choose the traditional path of becoming employees. He thus advised them to be purposeful in their decisions, aligning their aspirations with their chosen career trajectory. He shared insights on resume preparation. He stressed the need for attention-grabbing resumes that resonate with potential employers. Crafting a compelling narrative, highlighting achievements, and showcasing relevant skills are essential steps in this process.

Furthermore, he noted that students with entrepreneurial spirit, venturing into business and creating their own opportunities is a viable path. He encouraged students to explore this avenue, emphasizing the need for resilience and innovation.

Dr Agbonile also discussed the prospects of migrating abroad, known in local parlance as ‘japa’ for economic stability and job security. He urged students to weigh the benefits and challenges carefully.

In addition to these career paths, Dr Agbonile underscored the importance of continuous self-improvement. “Graduates should focus on honing their skills, identifying areas of specialization, seeking mentorship, and building robust professional networks”, he stated. These elements, he emphasized, are critical for long-term success.

Mr Ikponwonsa Osawaru, the Regional Manager of BET-King Nigeria, also addressed the audience during the event. His perspective on career growth and industry trends complemented Dr Agbonile’s insights.

As a token of appreciation, the Nigeria Association of Marketing Students presented awards of excellence to both guest speakers. The students expressed their gratitude for the enriching lectures, recognizing the value of the knowledge imparted.

The event served as a beacon of inspiration for the graduating class, equipping them with valuable tools to navigate their post-graduation journey. Dr Agbonile’s words resonated deeply, urging students to forge their paths with purpose and determination.
