INTRODUCTION
Perception is an active process that involves the transformation of the information received from outside the self. This takes place at the cortical level of the brain.
Disorders of perception remain some of the compelling experiences that patients present with.
These disorders, particularly auditory hallucinations or ‘hearing voices’ have a central place in psychopathology.
Along with delusions, they are thought to be synonymous with mental illness.
Imagery refers to the awareness of a percept that has been generated within the mind.
While perception cannot be terminated by an effort of will, imagery can be called up and terminated by an effort of will.
